MINIs to Mercedes - Your weekly dose of automotive nourishment

Would you consider the LFA to be a success?

Social spotlight đŸ“±

It almost doesn’t look real, but I can assure you it is. What you’re looking at is a heavily modified 1969 Mercedes W108, I can’t find too much detail about the build, but there are a few posts on Martin’s account. Watch the video with sound on, I can’t be sure what the engine is, but it certainly has a V8 sound about it.

Car of the week 💰

It’s hard to believe that nearly 20 years have passed since the MINI GP was launched. It put the Cooper S on a diet, losing the rear seats and weighing in at only 1090kgs, this paired with 218bhp meant that it would achieve 60mph in 6.5s and continue on to 149mph. Originally £22k, they’re now available from around £14k - I’d say they’ve held their value quite well to be honest, especially considering a standard Cooper S from the same generation starts as low as £1,000 (although I dread to think what condition it would be in). Top Gear wrote a buyers guide if you’re tempted.

Podcast of the week đŸŽ™ïž

They just won’t stop. There’s another podcast on the scene, this time from the crew at Top Dead Centre with C.R.E.A.M (Cars Rule Everything Around Me). At the time of writing this, I haven’t had a chance to listen myself, there’s so many available now I struggle to find the time to stay up to date! I do like this pair though, very knowledgeable but good fun with it.

Worth a visit 🚘

It’s not long until the Classic Motor Show returns to the NEC, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the Classic Motor Show so they are promising lots of special celebrations. There will be over 300 car clubs there and over 3,000 vehicles, plenty to keep you entertained! If you’re tempted, you can find tickets here, they’re around £35 for adults.

Seen in the wild 👀

Saab are a brand you don’t see much of now, since going bankrupt in 2016 they have gradually faded away and disappeared from our roads. This 1987 Saab 900 Turbo is verging on ‘Festival of the unexceptional’ territory, but it stood out due to its condition and duck-egg blue paint. Second hand prices are wide-ranging, but it looks like you’ll need to be spending £10,000+ if you want anything like this.
